Bassoon Lessons FAQs

How old do students need to be to play bassoon?

Because the bassoon is kind of large, it takes a certain size of hands to comfortably reach all the keys, so the youngest bassoon students begin around age 11-12. It can be super helpful to have learned another instrument like piano before learning the bassoon.

Is the Bassoon the Instrument for me? Who might like playing bassoon?

There are a range of personalities that really take to playing the bassoon, so let me describe it and you can see if it suits you.
The bassoon has a fabulous chocolaty sound, and playing it you get to be right in the middle of the musical action. You’ll often be supporting the sound of the orchestra playing bass-lines, but you also get some time as a soloist (Vivaldi, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky all loved the solo bassoon). And in my favorite style of bassoon music (Baroque) you get to do some improvising. It has a huge range, from rich low sounds, to a singing tenor, to its distinctive colorful high notes which get used in some famous tunes for bassoon like the Rite of Spring. It can help if you enjoy some abstract thinking and solving puzzles. Some of the puzzles include: reading bass clef (and eventually tenor), keeping track finger combinations, listening and adjusting intonation by ear, and working on your reeds to get the best sound.

Where do I get good bassoon reeds? Can I learn to make them?

Good quality bassoon reeds make a huge difference in how well the bassoon works and feels to play. The reed literally makes the sound, no reed, no sound; not good reed, hard to make good sound. There are a number of great reed makers we can recommend for purchasing reeds, and our bassoon teacher keeps some reeds on hand for new students. All students are encouraged to learn to adjust their reeds, and eventually to learn how to make them, because it develops a lot of technical and musical understanding.

What areas do you serve?

Lessons are offered either in your home, online for local and international students, or in one of our teachers’ teaching spaces. Contact us to see which option will be best for you. We currently work with a wide range of students, nationally and internationally.

Do you offer online lessons?

Yes! Many of our students and parents prefer online lessons because students progress while maintaining the convenience of staying at home. We find that online lessons encourage our students to fully understand each concept. It’s easy to simply move a child’s hand in a lesson, but having the student understand the reason behind it and fix the hand on their own is an even more efficient strategy. Take lessons from the convenience of your own space and skip commuting time!

How many times per week are lessons?

All students are welcome to take one or multiple lessons per week. Lessons are offered weekly for 30 minutes, 45 minutes, or 60 minutes. If you would like to have lessons longer than 60 minutes, get in touch with us.

Do you offer performance opportunities or recitals?

Yes. We offer multiple recitals throughout the year and encourage all students to perform to help increase their confidence and artistry.
